1. Introduction
Quality Waste is committed to providing a safe, healthy, and productive work environment for all employees. This Alcohol and Drug Policy outlines our approach to managing alcohol and drug use in the workplace to ensure safety, compliance with legal obligations, and support for employees.
2. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to:
- Maintain a safe and efficient working environment.
- Minimise the risks associated with alcohol and drug use.
- Support employees who may need help with substance misuse.
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements.
3. Scope
This policy applies to all employees, contractors, and visitors on company premises or engaged in company business.
4. Definitions
- Alcohol: Any beverage containing ethanol, including but not limited to beer, wine, and spirits.
- Drugs: Any substances, whether legal or illegal, that can impair an individual’s ability to perform their job safely and effectively. This includes prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and recreational drugs.
- The use of alcohol or drugs in a manner that impairs work performance or endangers safety.
5. Prohibited Conduct
The following activities are strictly prohibited:
- Reporting to work under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Consuming alcohol or drugs during work hours, including breaks.
- Possessing, distributing, or using illegal drugs on company premises or during work hours.
- Engaging in activities that impair your ability to perform your job safely and effectively due to alcohol or drug use.
6. Responsibilities
Employees are expected to:
- Report to work in a fit condition to perform their duties safely.
- Inform their line manager if they are taking medication that may affect their performance or safety.
- Seek help if they are struggling with substance misuse.
Managers and Supervisors are expected to:
- Promote a culture of safety and compliance with this policy.
- Address any concerns about an employee’s conduct related to substance use promptly and discreetly.
- Provide support and refer employees to appropriate resources if needed.
7. Procedures
7.1 Testing
- Candidates may be required to undergo alcohol and drug testing as a condition of employment, subject to relevant laws.
- Employees may be selected for random testing in safety-sensitive roles.
- Testing may be conducted if there is reasonable suspicion that an employee is under the influence of alcohol or drugs while at work.
- Testing may be conducted following a workplace accident or incident.
7.2 Confidentiality
- All information related to testing and substance misuse will be handled confidentially and in accordance with data protection laws.
7.3 Support and Rehabilitation
- Employees with substance misuse issues are encouraged to seek help. The company offers support through:
- Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs).
- Access to counselling and rehabilitation services.
- Confidential discussions with HR to explore appropriate adjustments or support.
8. Disciplinary Action
Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment. Disciplinary procedures will be conducted in accordance with Quality Waste’s disciplinary policy.
9. Review and Monitoring
This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure its effectiveness and compliance with relevant laws. Employees will be informed of any changes.
